The Village of Rianxo

Sketching Galicia

If you've ever desired to get away to a small village surrounded by stone cottages, green pastures, misty forests, and a guaranteed view of the water, Rianxo is the place. This series was inspired by my year's stay in Galicia, the region of Spain known for its Celtic heritage, Galician language, and The St. James Way Pilgrimage.

The village provided me with three main roads (Above street, middle street, and below street), a beach, a hiking path, several restaurants, a community and recreational center, and a bookshop. This space had all I could need.  I spent much of my time creating and reflecting, and in many ways healing.

At the end of the year, I compiled these drawings into a book and shared them with my colleagues and friends, the true Rianxeiros. People throughout Spain know the famous Galician song by Anxo Romero Loxo, titled A Rianxeira, It means the woman of Rianxo. The song speaks of the Galician emigration to Argentina during the first half of the 20th century. May its lyrics impart the spirit of Rianxo.

Ondiñas veñen
ondiñas veñen e van
non te embarques Rianxeira
que te vás a marear.

Ripples come

ripples come and go

do not embark, Rianxeira

for you will get sea sick.
